Mamm and Dat were sitting at the table drinking coffee when Phoebe came home.
âWell, off to bed for you,â Mamm announced as Phoebe came in.
âOh, Mamm.â Phoebe began. âYou wonât believe this, but the doctor let me catch the baby! I canât believe it. It was the most amazing thing in the world. And Paulineâs named her âPhoebe.ââ
âNow you go right on up to bed. You must be done in,â her mamm ordered.
Dat asked, looking puzzled, âWhat do you mean âcatchâ? Did a stork drop it from the sky?â he asked, chuckling at his own wit.
âWell,â Phoebe began. âBabies get born without a lot of help usually, so we donât say âdelivered,â but âcatchâ instead. I assisted. Pauline did all the work.â
Phoebe sat down at the table as Mamm got her a cup of coffee.
âGut thing itâs Saturday. I can sleep in,â Phoebe agreed.
âWell, I guess thatâs right,â he said as her dat continued to ponder this catching thing.
Phoebe helped herself to a thick slice of brown bread and, borrowing her mammâs knife from across the table, helped herself to butter and jam.
âHere, let me make you an omelet,â Mamm said, jumping up from her chair.
âNo, Mamm. Just this bread is fine, really. I want to go to bed then.â
âWere your births easy, Mamm?â Phoebe asked, her mouth still full of the good bread.
âYa, they actually were. Some think itâs harder when you are older, but it wasnât. None of my three were bad. When you keep reminding yourself youâll have a little bobbeli in your arms soon, you can put up with the pain.â
âDo they give you a catcherâs mitt, then?â Dat asked, half serious it seemed.
âWe had a nice family doctor with all of you. All this time I thought he delivered youâ¦.â Mamm continued the puzzle in her head now too.
âDo they also teach midwifery at that school?â Dat wanted to know.
âNo, Dat. You need another degree for that, and it can take four more years or more. No way. Iâm happy to just be helping, but for sure it was wunderbar-gut. Iâll never forget it as long as I live,â Phoebe added dreamily, taking another bite of her bread. âIs this a new recipe, Mamm?â she asked suddenly.
âYa,â Mamm answered. âThereâs no white flour in it, and it has a sourdough starter for the yeast. Only stone-ground wheat and honey, and oats and wheat germ and other things. Itâs so much better for you.â
âWell, I am going to bed,â Phoebe finally announced, gulping the last of her coffee.
âI hope you can sleep,â Dat said. âWeâll try to be shtum,â he added.
âOh, you donât need to worry. Nothing could wake me now,â Phoebeâs voice trailed off as she headed for the stairs, but not before turning back and adding, âAnd Mamm, she weighs nine and a half pounds! And did I tell you Stephen and I have a date tonight, so donât figure me in for supper.â
